Rodents generally move indoors to find food and shelter. But quickly and very rapidly infest your home. Droppings:

So, you would find traces of it in the kitchen mostly especially near the area where food is stored. The rodents love damp places and often leave droppings there as well. So, places like the kitchen sink and other damp places are potent areas to find the droppings. 
The feces of rodents carry harmful bacteria. It can even trigger diseases such as Salmonella and Hantavirus. Allergies are also very common. Thus, the feces must be removed immediately with a mask and gloves on. If you have children and pets at home, be extra cautious to look for the feces, before it does the damage. 
Gnaw marks: 
Well, once the infestation starts, the devastation follows. Rodents are known for damaging property. It chews almost everything. It can chew wood, clothes, pipes, and even wires. These marks are the signs that rodents are actively destroying the property. This is a clear indication that you are under threat. The chewing of wires can start a fire, the chewing of pipes can create water leakage, and so forth. Nest: 
Rodents love to be secluded place and in dark. They generally create their nests with shredded papers, clothes, cotton, package materials, and so on. Either they find these somewhere else and bring them to the nest or build the nest where these are found. Tracks:
Rodents leave their marks and dirt. This is a very clear sign of their movement. The oily fur of the rodents generally creates track marks. This could also lead you to the nest of the rodents. However, this is a clear warning sign that you have been invaded. 
Noises: 
You will be able to hear a clear and distinct noise from the rodents. However, this could be faint sometimes, depending on the location of the nest. However, such noises are also a warning of infestation.
